Values serve as guiding principles, helping individuals navigate various situations and make ethical decisions. In this context, Kelum et al. (2021) define values as fundamental beliefs endorsed by society over time. These beliefs not only shape individual behavior but also contribute to the broader cultural fabric of society. However, understanding values goes beyond mere recognition; it requires practical application. As a student, reflecting on personal values and their implications in different scenarios is crucial for effective communication and interaction. Programs like CIEX offer platforms for such reflection, integrating discussions on values into education. By exploring values within the context of language learning, students gain insights into cultural nuances and develop communication skills aligned with societal norms. Thus, the intersection of values, education, and language fosters holistic personal and cultural development.
Yohaly Lazgare Copyright (c) 2024 CIEX JOURNAL https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc/4.0 https://journal.ciex.edu.mx/index.php/cJ/article/view/183 Sat, 27 Apr 2024 00:00:00 -0600 Self-efficacy Beliefs of EFL Teachers when Having Transnational Students in their Classroom https://journal.ciex.edu.mx/index.php/cJ/article/view/173
For many years, return migration from the United States to Mexico has been very present. According to Jacobo (2018), as cited in Despange and Manzano (2020), 1.5 million of these return migrants are school-aged children. Nonetheless, little do we know about how these transnational student teachers face the situation. The main objective of this study is to bring understanding to the self-efficacy beliefs EFL teachers present when receiving transnational students. For this purpose, a qualitative case study was conducted in which five EFL teachers at a public Mexican university were interviewed. Findings indicate that teachers’ self-efficacy perception tends to be positive and enriching. Teachers reported not having problems when integrating these students into their classrooms. However, when facing obstacles, they have developed different strategies to overcome them. This brings forth new information that had not been presented before, with the intent of closing the gap in the transnational literature.
Lilette Hernández, Oscar Narváez Copyright (c) 2024 CIEX JOURNAL https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc/4.0 https://journal.ciex.edu.mx/index.php/cJ/article/view/173 Sat, 27 Apr 2024 00:00:00 -0600 The Effectiveness of the Processing Instruction Model https://journal.ciex.edu.mx/index.php/cJ/article/view/176
The purpose of this study is to verify the efficiency of VanPatten’s (1996) Processing Instruction model in the teaching of English relative clauses in two different groups of participants: an intervention group and a traditional group. These two groups of students were enrolled in a BA in ELT. This study was conducted online due to the pandemic of Covid-19, where a pre-test and a post-test were administered to the intervention group, and only the post-test was administered to the traditional group. The statistical analysis shows a significant difference between the intervention group scores on the pre-test and post-test as well as a significant difference between the traditional group and intervention group. For the qualitative part of the study, the intervention group completed a feedback questionnaire, and the results show that most students consider that employing this model for language teaching is an effective approach in the teaching of relative clauses.
Dr. Luis Humberto Rodríguez Silva, Dra. Facts were collected through a survey specifically designed to gather data and analyze it in terms of severity levels and name the most common ones. Preliminary results show that 32% of students said that behaviors such as copying exam answers or bribing are of minimal severity, while only 19% consider them to be of maximum severity. However, 67% admitted to never having committed such behaviors, while 15% admitted to having committed these acts one to ten times. Finally, only 3% accepted having committed this type of irregularity. In conclusion, results were favorable since the majority does not practice these behaviors, but it is necessary to pay attention to the minority that carries out this type of academic fraud, which is why the analysis concludes with suggestions to reduce these actions.
Alejandrina Zurita Sarao, Irma A.
